He studies economics and political history at the University of Warsaw as well as engineering and radios at the Warsaw Technical Institut. He gets a job at the Ministry of Post and Telegraphy and is able to use knowledge he obtains from telegrams that pass through his hands to make large profits on the stock exchange. With the start of the war, he begins spying for the Germans. By claiming that he has a large network, which he calls tartar, in place, he sells them information gleaned from the cables he reads. Later, he expands his market to include the Americans and Swedes. Upon deciding that his position in Poland is becoming too tenuous, he flees to Turkey, where he claims to be a Polish refugee. Before he leaves Poland, though, he visits Gdynia one more time to cut his birth-record from the church records. He sets up another network, which he calls rahir, and offers its services to the Allies -- after the Allied victory appears assured. After the war, he moves to South America, and from there , he begins setting up his empire, SPECTRE, by recruiting 3 men each from the Uniano Siciliano, Union Corse, SMERSH, Gestapo, Yugoslav secret police and rahir. After making money with some small robberies, kidnappings and blackmailings, Blofeld's first major act is to steal 2 atomic warheads from the British. He intends to to extort 100 million pounds from the Americans and British governments for their return. His plans are spoiled when Bond and a crew of American submariners intercept Emilio Largo and his men when they try to plant one of the bombs. After a drastic plastic surgery job, Blofeld regroups and continues to make money using SPECTRE. The only recorded incident is one where SPECTRE discovered the whereabouts of a Soviet defector, and paid an ex- Gestapo man to kill him, expecting to get twice that from the Soviets. The plan fails when the Mounties get wind of it and send Bond in to take the place of the defector and Bond kills the man sent to kill him. Blofeld's next major operation is to start a clinic in the Piz Gloria, where he hopes to treat allergies through hypnosis. He then wants to use the patients to spread disease in the agricultural regions of England. While at the Piz Gloria, he also wants to have his claim as the Comte de Bleuville recognized by the Royal College of Arms, and has an agent of theirs, Sir Hilary Bray, come visit him to discuss the matter. Instead of Bray, Bond is sent, and he manages to escape with the truth about the Piz Gloria. Bond returns to the Piz Gloria with a band of men from the Union Corse, and destroys the buildings. Blofeld manages to escape, and a few days later, kills Bond's wife of a few hours. Blofeld next turns up as Dr. Shatterhand in Japan. He buys a castle there and plants a garden filled with only poisonous plants.
