Filmmaker Kevin McClory tried for many years to make a rival James Bond film, because he owned a part of Thunderball (written with Jack Whittingham). He did make 1983's Never Say Never Again, and tried to make a 3rd version called Warhead. The lawsuits against Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were concluded due to Sony's purchase MGM in 2004. The story is told in the book The Battle for Bond by Robert Sellers.
